About in vitro fertilization

The desire for motherhood doeasn’t know barriers, neither biological nor personal. A woman, when she dreams of having a child, goes to great lengths to get it even if her body rejects a natural conception. “I underwent six in vitro fertilization before the birth of Filippo. Five failures that have put a strain on my sanity. But when I finally knew I was pregnant, for me started a new life”. The story of Rita is common to many women who are forced to undertake the assisted reproduction. Today, fortunately, the medicine has reached important goals, even in this field. With new genetic techniques, Next Generation Sequencing (NGS), which allow to assess the quality of the embryo, increase the percentage of children: the 80% of women become pregnant from the first attempt. Intervenes on this sensitive issue Prof. Ermanno Greco, urologist, gynecologist and scientific director of the Reproductive Medicine Center European Hospital in Rome.
Why traditional techniques still have low degrees of success?
“Because they are not able to assess comprehensively the real vitality of the embryos obtained in vitro and then transferred them into the uterine cavity. Several scientific studies said that the ability of the uterus to nestle embryos depends on two critical factors: to 70% of their genetic normality and for 30% of the uterine tissue from the ability to produce some molecules essential for the plant. These studies demonstrated that, even in young patients, 40-50% of the embryos produced in a treatment in vitro fertilization is not healthy genetically and therefore not able to give an evolutionary pregnancy. However, the chromosomal analysis by NGS allows to assess not only all of the embryo’s chromosomes, but also the mitochondrial DNA, which is the energy center that plays a key role in the developing embryo and then fetus”.
What are the main advantages for the person who make the pre-implantation diagnosis?
“The benefits are both preventive (reduction of failure rate) and therapeutically (reduction of the risk of spontaneous abortion) and improvement (increase in success rates). Today, therefore, no longer makes sense that the couple traveling to abroad to fulfill their dream of giving birth to a child. (www.icsiroma.it)
