Cancer incidence, the number of Italian people who each year are diagnosed with cancer (and so in the most developed countries), is unfortunately increasing in absolute terms. This is because one of the most important risk factors for most of the tumors is the age: increasing the proportion of elderly in the general population, also increases the number of people most at risk. However in recent years, mortality rates have decreased thanks to early detection, that allows to identify the cancer at an early stage, when it is much easier to treat this terrible disease. The time factor is crucial in cancer: early detection makes to perform minimally invasive procedures and non-destructive.Prof. Vito Pansadoro, well-known surgeon urologist at the head of the Foundation Vincenzo Pansadoro for Uro-oncology Research and Director of the Center Urology Laparoscopic and Robotics, speaks long with us  about the importance renal ultrasonography. He said: “The cancer screening is a significant investment for health, which results in a reduction in mortality. It is a type of non-invasive investigation, which does not require contrast media and is totally devoid of risks and side effects. Thanks to ultrasound it is now possible to diagnose many still silent, and at the initial state kidney diseases, allowing to take timely action in a stage where it is still possible obtain the final healing of the patient, avoiding also the radical nephrectomy. The symptom triad (hematuria, pain, palpable mass) characteristic of renal cell carcinoma is now relegated to the past: about 70-80% of renal tumors, in fact, thanks to ultrasound, are diagnosed today during a regular path spontaneous cancer prevention.
The tumor is, then, often observed in a still localized form, confined to the kidney, susceptible of conservative surgery enucleoresection or partial nephrectomy. “By this way can thereby avoid the Radical nephrectomy with obvious benefits for patients.” But progress is not limited to the diagnostic phase. “For about ten years in Italy is active Robotic Surgery Urological that allows to take action on the prostate, bladder, and kidney with a striking 3D and HD visual detail, and with savings of tissues thanks to the mini-invasiveness procedure.Additional benefits for the patient, compared to open and laparoscopic surgery, are represented by the absence of pain, the reduction of intra-operative bleeding risk and less hospital stay, estimated at 2 or 3 days.”It is estimated that about 80% of patients who are diagnosed with small renal cell carcinoma is a candidate for these minimally invasive procedures. The radical nephrectomy, on the contrary, is necessary for extensive tumors or with multiple locations. The literature has clearly demonstrated that patients who have undergone a radical nephrectomy, because of decreased renal function, have a reduced life expectancy compared with patients treated by enucleation or partial nephrectomy “. The Foundation Vincenzo Pansadoro, chaired by the distinguished professor, has devoted nearly 30 years of clinical research in the Uro-Oncology field. The Foundation’s operational arm is the Laparoscopic and Robotic Urology Center and the Division of Medical Oncology, where the clinical work takes place with a specific address and cutting edge.
